The cell was dank and mildewed. The smells of countless desperate inhabitants permeated the walls and the ‘bedding’ was unmentionable. The team leaned against a wall and tried to ignore the odor of the room, and each other.
Jack rubbed his face with one hand. “Okay. We need to get free. Ideas?”
Teal’c raised an eyebrow. “You are already free, O’Neill. You are merely confined."
Jack opened his mouth to reply then shut it again without speaking and rubbed his face again. Both hands, this time.
Daniel was looking at Teal’c with a bemused expression. “Uh, while I agree with you in a larger sense, the confined part is kind of a problem right now.”
“It is not, Daniel Jackson. It is an inconvenience. Were we not free, we would indeed have a problem.”
Sam couldn’t suppress a smile, though she was worried by their situation. “Do you have any ideas about this inconvenience, Teal’c?”
“I do, Captain Carter. I shall employ deceit.”
Jack raised his eyebrows. “Deceit? That’s kind of an unusual tactic for you, isn’t it Teal’c?”
“I have learned much on your planet.” Teal'c regarded him seriously.
Jack frowned at Daniel. “What have you been teaching him, Daniel?”
Daniel looked somewhat alarmed. “I don’t know, Jack. It wasn’t me, honest. But he has a TV now – it could have been anything.”
The outer door to the cellblock swung open with a crash. Their slovenly jailer was delivering the stale bread and water that was their daily meal. He put the water bucket down outside their cell.
Teal’c motioned to the jailer then pulled a hand partly from his pocket, giving the man a brief glimpse of some chocolate coins, covered in gold foil. Captain Carter had given them to him several days earlier. He returned them to his pocket. “I believe that gold is the currency of this world, is it not?”
The man licked his lips and stared at Teal’s pocket. “I can’t let you out, if that’s what you’re thinking.”
“I wish only for information.” Teal’c spoke softly, moved toward the bars and motioned the man closer. The man approached, trailing a stench that rivaled the cell. Teal’c reached through the bars, grabbed the jailer’s clothing and pulled him into the bars. “You will be silent, or I will be forced to hurt you.”
The jailer nodded as well as his position against the bars would allow.
Sam moved forward and took the keys from the man’s belt. She reached around to the front of the lock and opened the door. Jack bound the jailer with his own clothing, while Daniel ripped a strip of cloth from the jailer's tattered headdress and bent to gag the man.
Daniel straightened and looked at Jack. “Whatever Teal’c was watching, I bet it was from the seventies.”
Jack grimaced. “Early eighties at the latest. Teal’c, the thing about that plan? It wouldn’t have worked if this guy wasn’t as dumb as a sack of hammers.”
Teal’c looked momentarily nonplussed by the reference to hammers then nodded. “Indeed, O’Neill. Those in these entertainments are poorly trained, as is this man. I believed that deceit would be equally successful.”
Sam shook her head. “That was lucky. Teal’c. And I can’t believe that you still have all that chocolate.”
“Do you wish some, Captain Carter?”
She nodded and he passed her a coin.
They found their packs and weapons in a room outside the cellblock and donned their gear.
“We are no longer confined, O’Neill.”
“No, Teal’c, we’re not.”
“And we are free.”
“We are. Where’s this going, Teal’c?”
“Because we were free, but confined, we are now both free and unconfined. Had we been confined, but not free, we would be unconfined, but still not free.”
Jack had a pained look on his face, while Daniel was smiling broadly.
Sam pulled her pack into place. “He’s got you there, Colonel.”
“Jaffa philosophy. Great. I’m sure Teal'c and Daniel will have some terrific debates. Let’s go home.”
