Occasionally, I worry that I might be making SG-1 characters too funtional after injuries, getting themselves out of situations when they would really be unconcious. I'm going to stop worrying about that now. From a news story out of Florida that appeared today:

"POSTED: Thursday, October 1, 2009
UPDATED: 10:16 am EDT October 2, 2009

FRUITLAND PARK, Fla. -- A woman riding on a motorcycle in Lake County Thursday night was thrown into a lake and swam to shore after her leg was severed in a three-car crash, according to authorities."

If I'd written that in a story, I'd really be questioning it's believability. Clearly not a problem. On the other hand, next time I read about one of the characters wilting like a flower over a relatively minor injury or illness....

Name Generators!

Most. Useful. Thing. Ever.
I don't know about you guys, but I have a heck of a time coming up with names. Name generators to the rescue! These ones are for both regular type names (complete with generated addresses and SIN numbers) and fantasy names appropriate for offworld characters. There's even an option for names with apostrophes, a percentage of which are good for Jaffa! Whew! I needed that! Names are the hardest thing to come up with after awesome last lines. ;)

Thanks: A big thank you to Name Generators.

More Bad Ass Than Star Trek

Okay, this is pretty funny. I ran across this blog, 10 Reasons Why SG-1 Is More Bad Ass Than Star Trek, while looking for something else. It's a funny analysis by a relative newcomer to the series. His canon is a bit off in places, as might be expected, but not in any way that really matters. Well, except to people like us.

More on things you see while editing video...

My feeling has always been that Daniel was mighty irritated with Jack at the end of 'Shades of Grey', but that it was wildly exaggerated in fanfic. I haven't actually changed my mind about the wildly exaggerated part, but I do think it does go beyond way beyond irritation. I still don't think he's going to sulk, have a tantrum, cry, or (God forbid) want to talk about it, but what I see here leads me to believe that he's not a happy camper at all, even if he is treating it pretty lightly.

More character pondering

Working with video is very interesting. I find you see things that, while you might be aware of them on some level, you don't necessarily notice in a conscious way. The one I'm working on right now focuses on Daniel's stubornness and willingness to argue for what he believes, sometimes very aggressively.

What was interesting about this was the difficulty in finding clips that illustrate this after season five. People often talk about Daniel being more bad tempered in seasons eight and nine, but in sorting through the video, I've come to the conclusion that this isn't actually the case. If anything, he's more even tempered. In fact, he rarely displays the degree of anger and frustration that he did in the early seasons. He's much more self-contained. Irritation, yes. Sarcasm, yes. But not openly expressed anger.

Hmmm... Icon

So it occured to me that at some point, probably in the next year, I'm going to have to delve into romance if I want to keep improving as a writer. PG-13 romance, to be sure, but romance of some kind. It's part of the human condition, after all, and therefore part of storytelling.

That leads me to difficulties within the scope of SG-1 in terms of canon. Now I could go AU and have a good time, I certainly did with 'Daniel in Wonderland'. I'd run into the same problems, though.

I don't feel able to write Sha're, and with not personally seeing the viability of the regular fan-favorite pairings.... Well, maybe Daniel/Janet, but I don't want to do that to Daniel. It's bad enough as is, and he's had enough heartache for ten guys. I could do something with Daniel and Keira, but I'd rather not. For one thing, I don't think his feelings were seriously engaged, so any story I wrote there would be about the nature of redemption, etc, not romance.

Anyway, I'm working on a video and was looking at frames in 'Icon'. There's definately something there. From what I remember of the dialogue, there was an attraction between Leda Kane and Daniel that was mostly subtext as she was married to Jarrod Kane. I seem to remember that is was acknowledged, or hinted at, by Leda when Daniel left, but not really by Daniel. Looking at the video without sound, you get a rather different picture of things, though. Daniel doesn't look uninterested at all, or like he's merely feeling compassion for her.

I think I might have found me some non-team, canon 'ship. Sad 'ship based on loneliness and shared tragedy, 'ship that doesn't even get as far as holding hands, but 'ship. ;)

Thoughts?

Daimons (Gen, PG-13)

Title: Daimons
Author: SG_Betty
Word count: 23,142
Genre: Stargate SG-1, Gen, Action/Adventure
Characters: Daniel Jackson, Jonas Quinn, Jack O’Neill
Spoilers: Meridian, Full Circle, Homecoming, Fallout
Prompt: Daniel and Jonas on an offworld mission after 'Homecoming'

Notes: This story takes place early in season eight, after New Order, and before Icon. It wasn’t structured to be divided into chapters, so points of division are based on LJ’s posting rules and convenience more than anything else. It was written for Phoenix_Gate, and is very, very late. Thank you, Paian, for being for being so very patient. Here is the link to the posting there:

Daimons-Links on Phoenix_Gate (same as the one's here, but there's all those other Phoenix_Gate stories).

Illustrations: Phoenix_gate stories had illustrators, and I signed up to do my own. I posted two versions of the story: text only, and fully illustrated. I also posted the pictures separately. The illustrated versions may be memory intensive, although the pictures aren't large.

Thanks: First of all I want to thank Randomfreshink, for going entirely above and beyond. This story took a truly incredible number of drafts and massive rewrites. I probably learned more from writing it, and from Random’s advice, than anything I have ever done. My gratitude in immense.

Thanks also to Redbyrd for the final betas, looking at it with a fresh set of eyes to find the things we missed, and for very helpful advice.

I would also like to thank Quarryquest for providing both the hieroglyphs and the translations, and for beta-ing their use within the story. This story started with those glyphs and wouldn’t exist without them.

Further thanks go to Eilidh17 for correcting my Phoenician, Splash_The_Cat for beta-ing my archeological methods, and Chocolatekettle for beta-ing my use of anatomy. I really appreciate all the help.
I couldn’t find anyone to beta the ancient Greek, so if anyone sees errors, please feel free to PM me!

Here are the links. They're in the different parts, as well.

A disturbing thought...

It just occurred to me that if one wanted to write a story set in the present that would conform (possibly) to future canon, Sam probably couldn't be on the team. She'd be commanding the 'General Hammond.' Vala might not be there, either. That's more difficult to say.

Now, that would mean they'd need a science person, at least on a temporary basis. You see where I'm going with this, don't you? *Oh, noez!*

Just imagine the snark level and infighting on a team comprised of Daniel, Cam, and Rodney. Just imagine... Without Sam's calming influence, without the distraction of Vala (although she probably wouldn't really help, she'd egg them on), wow!

Oh course, they'd be professional about it, well, Cam and Daniel would, but still...

Edit: It occurs to me that Radek would be a much better choice. He and Daniel could geek out together rather charmingly.
