More on things you see while editing video...

My feeling has always been that Daniel was mighty irritated with Jack at the end of 'Shades of Grey', but that it was wildly exaggerated in fanfic. I haven't actually changed my mind about the wildly exaggerated part, but I do think it does go beyond way beyond irritation. I still don't think he's going to sulk, have a tantrum, cry, or (God forbid) want to talk about it, but what I see here leads me to believe that he's not a happy camper at all, even if he is treating it pretty lightly.

Jack is exonerated.

Everyone is very happy. Or not. Daniel seems to be thinking 'Are you freaking kidding me?'

Sam summons up a 'We're glad to have you back, sir.' Just look how much Daniel agrees.

Teal'c concurs, 'Indeed.' Daniel thinks 'Et tu, Brute?'

Daniel is conspicuously silent.

Jack tries to make things right with Daniel. ('I was bugged, the foundation is solid, etc.') Daniel accepts this in the surface, being pretty casual. ('Yeah, sure, not a problem, I understand completely' stuff.) He even sort of smiles at one point.

Basically, irritated, but willing to let it go after he gets in a good dig. Which is this next bit. Jack says he appreciates that Daniel came by, that means something.

And Daniel tells him, 'No. No, actually, it doesn't. We drew straws. I lost.'

All still pretty light. We've seen annoyance/incredulity in the gateroom, and some pointed sarcasm here. He's a little stiff, both in his mannerisms and vocally, but there's still no sign that Daniel is truly angry or deeply hurt. But look at this as he walks away.

Wow. Look at the look he gives Jack. I'm surprised Jack's face didn't melt, or something.

His expression doesn't change, all the way out of the shot, and it's a pretty intense expression.

That's not 'emo-guy has hurt feelings' (which doesn't surprise me in the least, I have to say. Daniel isn't 'emo-guy.'), that's 'angry Daniel is angry.' It's not out-of-control angry, because he's perfectly able to play it light and string Jack along. He's perfectly able to deliver his zinger and leave, controlling what he shows and when/how he shows it. At the same time, once he does, he doesn't even bother to hide his expression, letting Jack see the totally pissed off before he turns away.

My feeling is that after this, it's done. Never to be mentioned again, unless Jack forces the issue. After hearing what was going on, Daniel knows 'the foundation is solid', but that has nothing to do with why he's angry. He's probably even angrier that Jack thinks that's what the problem is.

  • This is Daniel's "I'm pissed off at you, so don't mess with me unless you're bringing something chocolate and/or caffeinated as an apology" face.

I think Daniel's just as mad at himself as Jack... mad at Jack because he knew the right buttons to push, and mad at himself for letting Jack snow him when he should have known him better than that.
    • My take is that it's bigger than that. Jack used his overture against him, but I don't think Daniel would blame himself. That's on Jack. Daniel wouldn't like it, and wouldn't think he should have to expect that his teammate might be lying to him, but he'd get why Jack did it once he knew the scenario. I think it's more about the fact that the SGC would consider him a suspect in the first place, conning him and the rest of the team. I think he's deeply, personally offended, and and offended that Jack would go along with it.

Fascinating! I hadn't freeze-framed it, and I hadn't realized Daniel's expression held through the end of the scene. (I do have my own take on "Shades of Grey" in "Better Than Revenge", which is not entirely out of harmony with your analysis here.)

I think Jack totally expected the team to greet him with open arms and had absolutely no clue what to do when they didn't. He tried to play it off with humor and didn't expect that to fail too. And yet, I don't really feel bad for him!

But I have to ask what you mean by your last sentence: "He's probably even angrier that Jack thinks that's what the problem is." That Jack thinks the problem is that Daniel took the "foundation" remark too much to heart?
    • Yeah, Jack's apologising for the little thing, not the big one, and he doesn't even realize it. I think that would be infuriating. I mean, there were two things that happened here. One, the SGC decided they were suspects in an NID plot to steal from the very people Daniel had worked so hard to bring on board as allies, enlisting Jack to con them, and two, Jack wasn't very nice when he used Daniel's words against him. And Jack decides Daniel is mad about the 'not nice' part. Sure, that would have stung, but for Daniel, impugning his integrity and his commitment, even by going along with the plan would be worse, I think.

Thanks for the link! I'll have to go make sure I've read it. :)
  • I definitely see Daniel with a bit of latent anger lingering for a couple of weeks post "Shades of Grey" and distancing himself from Jack after everything that happened, and Daniel I think definitely has it in him to hold a grudge for a very long time.

(Completely off the point, I totally have to make some icons out of those scenes, because Daniel looks AWESOME in them!!! I'd like to throw that half-baseball hat thingie out a window though that Jack has on!)
